There were all these fabulous upscale houses built using reclaimed everything-they-could-get-their-hands-on. There were so many great ideas and me without my camera. One thing I remembered, probably because it was easy enough for me to pull off, was the pulls they used in the den. They had taken old wooden croquette mallet heads and used it on the drawers and cabinet doors (hefty reclaimed barn boards sanded and oiled. Gorgeous!!)<br />
I had this five-out-of-six-and-no-ball set for over a year in the shop with no buyers. I'll bet they wish they bought them now! The hard part is finding the right dresser or buffet to pull off the look and, of course, the right number of drawers. When I crossed paths with this ugly little thing at a garage sale, I knew it was the one.<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUUi8gRdrHeBIgg9w_97yqccs1yMf5Tpqsivmtz4c-C_fybGynO0Oi0zArkUzJ7iBCKI4Q3xKDEIMVMOZl4mgOsD7gPtIJgO4LKgawyxU7FlSQpzYUW0j5VD0RMMJjWz6yYKmMlmoTG1KG/s1600/Picture+4-20+018.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUUi8gRdrHeBIgg9w_97yqccs1yMf5Tpqsivmtz4c-C_fybGynO0Oi0zArkUzJ7iBCKI4Q3xKDEIMVMOZl4mgOsD7gPtIJgO4LKgawyxU7FlSQpzYUW0j5VD0RMMJjWz6yYKmMlmoTG1KG/s400/Picture+4-20+018.jpg" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I had to remove the veneer along the bottom and putty the lines in the drawers. (I guess now I realize why they didn't sell.) I painted a new stripe and polyurethaned the heads. Of course, I kept the handles for another project I have no idea about. The finished dresser....................</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPyk1wQOEVAgq_mIoYoSgXtTUbUcJnEI9gvLEjGkt6ZU5OhsDVwrgVJ_og01U6z4nP4OxZCUdsbplrPgHAhPcaNjSxLTTLBDoBcubyGs5UofUw8K0YYzrW_62VDpsWJzssaJblzXiQObbw/s1600/Picture+4-20+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPyk1wQOEVAgq_mIoYoSgXtTUbUcJnEI9gvLEjGkt6ZU5OhsDVwrgVJ_og01U6z4nP4OxZCUdsbplrPgHAhPcaNjSxLTTLBDoBcubyGs5UofUw8K0YYzrW_62VDpsWJzssaJblzXiQObbw/s400/Picture+4-20+002.jpg" t8="true" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk-HZ8c9woPrCnyGWMX2_yr2Oc7maELMHOMCBRCgbXie5M-XIKXAVscNOxO-_ic6_PzcZTlREDBfiqI5BaPgFV2mlEiwYjdMrc1mJToepRQmTP-zNOOVFJu0UI9IfvEkmQmNwh7R4LICAf/s1600/Picture+4-20+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhk-HZ8c9woPrCnyGWMX2_yr2Oc7maELMHOMCBRCgbXie5M-XIKXAVscNOxO-_ic6_PzcZTlREDBfiqI5BaPgFV2mlEiwYjdMrc1mJToepRQmTP-zNOOVFJu0UI9IfvEkmQmNwh7R4LICAf/s640/Picture+4-20+001.jpg" t8="true" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I got lucky with the two smaller drawers. It ebbs and flows between estates we buy and we always manage to leave some space to walk from the front to the back, but woe to the person who needs something specific because it is usually somewhere in the back corner on the very bottom. Murphy's Law.<br />
Because we find so many great estates, we can't get through all the stuff fast enough, so, inevitably, we see some of the same s*** packed and piled. So, when my partner came at me with this chicken cut out from an estate from April of last year, I knew I had to do something with it now or it would meet it's demise in an unprofitable way. It's funny how certain things get in your craw and it takes the brunt of your frustration. I could hardly blame him eventhough this poor chicken was the least of our junkyard problems. My partner got the short stick and had to 'reorganise' the mess. Some things you can control and others like dressers that need new backs or chairs that need a major overhaul, are a bit more daunting and time consuming.<br />
I wanted to do something special with her but nothing 'spoke' to me. I'm starting to think I'm some kind of board whisperer. It's got to be the right saying on the right board in the right font or it looks awkward and forced. Maybe I'm just anal.<br />
Meanwhile, I had this large bread board that I had been struggling with to find the right...you guessed it...everything. When I laid the chicken against it with the intention of putting thought into it later, it was like a light came down on it in spotlight and the angels started singing the Hallelujah. Destiny!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6MsBkrWBsp2Laq86J7P9CW2P7A27NNoReg7WKcxdxHb3cGfY651A3eapPb27VEr64223kV5EUoXVw8bpYyaNnRXV3HfNQozf-OLTsK82fp40MOyd2bz8k2q9JlkBBrhabR6D2VSx-Znz/s1600/Picture+4-20+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt6MsBkrWBsp2Laq86J7P9CW2P7A27NNoReg7WKcxdxHb3cGfY651A3eapPb27VEr64223kV5EUoXVw8bpYyaNnRXV3HfNQozf-OLTsK82fp40MOyd2bz8k2q9JlkBBrhabR6D2VSx-Znz/s400/Picture+4-20+001.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> I painted the chicken white and scuffed her a bit to add some loving. I then took some walnut stain to tone the white down and give her a look like she's been around the block, or coop, in this case.<br />
I scoured my fave haunts to find the right font. I already had this board destined to say something 'egg' but by itself, it didn't look complete. Not until I had this chicken thrust upon me. Oh, happy day!<br />
And, the finished look.............<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpW7pX29LsSHlxK_cqZCIpvUHflrq4uoDzXzzsLH2GAIEzFWGFmKXwdCRUd6YL-_iexSpVfgluKlr1-y7I7Dgor-QbuUmMuscmHCgAMfPh4mVkIJpfQ4K824xOtoIXCtWFfRxlbKaPv8y3/s1600/Picture+4-20+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" m$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpW7pX29LsSHlxK_cqZCIpvUHflrq4uoDzXzzsLH2GAIEzFWGFmKXwdCRUd6YL-_iexSpVfgluKlr1-y7I7Dgor-QbuUmMuscmHCgAMfPh4mVkIJpfQ4K824xOtoIXCtWFfRxlbKaPv8y3/s400/Picture+4-20+003.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> Just yesterday, I found the perfect board for a song snippet from The Sound of Music I've been dieing to do. I'll post it on our FB page when I get it done. </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> To me, this one screamed that I should do something a bit different. Because it was cheap and had easy lines, I felt it was worth the risk. I've been dying to do something with license plates but that didn't seem quite right. It had to be wooden-knob-friendly because I couldn't afford to put another 10 knobs into my collection. I'm finding I have a secret aversion to the mushroom knobs. I've only just found this out. Don't ask me why, but the first thing I find myself doing is thinking how I can replace them. I always thought they were sweet before but now I look at them like they don't have enough pizazz. Anyway, I wasn't going to let a replacement happen this time.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> We had just bought some chalkboard paint for my 'Lunch Special' sign, so I had my sudden epiphany as I was finishing that project. Chalkboard drawers!</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I sanded the dresser lightly and put on two coats of Rust-Oleum flat black.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I added the chalkboard spray paint to just the drawers and the knobs. I contemplated doing the whole thing but thought it would be too much of a 'dusty' look. I'm glad I didn't because I really like the contrast between the clean black and the used chalkboard surface.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> The best part... I got to keep the wooden knobs!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH09WGs2aYBvnt_aOZyH78jsWmtMvtwUTBhEKzyAdJKJ-undNIIQZWNEWWlbMYU944WkIJEpA6DeplxXduc976otlGhK1kvOdVBJHo4qdhDR29bPhMpqVj7gTA-oJvqlwshqW0SNWQIvCd/s1600/Picture+4-20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjH09WGs2aYBvnt_aOZyH78jsWmtMvtwUTBhEKzyAdJKJ-undNIIQZWNEWWlbMYU944WkIJEpA6DeplxXduc976otlGhK1kvOdVBJHo4qdhDR29bPhMpqVj7gTA-oJvqlwshqW0SNWQIvCd/s640/Picture+4-20.jpg" t8="true" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div> Tip: Don't forget to prime the surface before you actually write on it or the first thing you write will be permanent - always in the background. It is simple to do. Just take the side of your chalk and rub over the entire surface and wipe off. That's it! Now you are ready to write what you feel.</div>The Rusty Buckethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17672588787546040924noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1878343586187127567.post-80405864562796644342011-07-01T11:23:00.000-07:002011-07-01T11:23:20.265-07:00A Marriage of Two Desk Parts<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRnUO-5ue7thCd_sVxnLSv6LgmPewNasDyH7FbM3X5wQHRgyuRjBBVY82DBCwQiXjUt3D8llxAO9oWIy2xSGnTnW72DZ7tyAt_cR2CHPqWNhmBMOXS2GJolwUpo0USDwp2KnMj_71fdNrw/s1600/Picture+4-20+015.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRnUO-5ue7thCd_sVxnLSv6LgmPewNasDyH7FbM3X5wQHRgyuRjBBVY82DBCwQiXjUt3D8llxAO9oWIy2xSGnTnW72DZ7tyAt_cR2CHPqWNhmBMOXS2GJolwUpo0USDwp2KnMj_71fdNrw/s400/Picture+4-20+015.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div> I love it when people have an idea of what they want and we can make it happen! My partner had just returned from an auction and still had this beauty in the van when he sold it. A gal came in looking for a monsterous-sized desk she could use for a crafting table and when he showed her this, she saw the potential.<br />
Originally, it had been two separate pieces that were married together. The back part of the top had been cut off to make it sit flush with the wall. At one time this top would have been part of an island piece because you could see there was housing for another set of drawers. What are people thinking, huh?<br />
So, the new potential owner saw some recently finished pieces and loved the idea of a natural top with the dings and character enhanced with a shabby chic white paint job on the bottom base. Armed with a vision, we got to work.<br />
I started by scraping the thick grease layer off the top so my partner could sand it easier without gumming up the sander.<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL_gRfj_4pCm2IaSKdbWc2X_IwSphHWCtupWlJyUiLFyCi6f4SD7CzWUW-mSO4tyqSx-XccvjJrfKDywmWFqdDD-uRGudH6QtERBN8Utvn3YfyIfesSSH6yk8DQq-ZUOB2BVSWAuJbCmps/s1600/Picture+4-20+016.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" i$="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL_gRfj_4pCm2IaSKdbWc2X_IwSphHWCtupWlJyUiLFyCi6f4SD7CzWUW-mSO4tyqSx-XccvjJrfKDywmWFqdDD-uRGudH6QtERBN8Utvn3YfyIfesSSH6yk8DQq-ZUOB2BVSWAuJbCmps/s400/Picture+4-20+016.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;"> He sanded the top down while still leaving the character and used old maple flooring to fill in the back part. He ended with three coats of polyeurethane to seal the perfect character flaws.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: left;"> Meanwhile, I sanded off the silver spray paint oops on the drawers to have a more uniformly colored surface. </div><div style="text-align: left;"> Oh, the possibilities! Most people think it's the obvious garden border, but it is not! It is the makings of the base for my shabby chandeliers!</div><div style="text-align: left;"> I've got so much fencing, it is not even funny and with the season on, this is something I should have done a month or so ago. Marian does such a wonderful job turning tired dated pieces into something with real character.<br />
I had successfully re-did a previous dresser using one of her <a href="http://missmustardseed.blogspot.com/2011/04/dresser-story-and-decision.html">dressers as inspiration</a> but I didn't duplicate the natural top like she had. The contrast between that and the more shabby base was beautiful! <br />
When I received this photo-finish dresser, I knew it was the prefect experimental piece. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmO2UbGqMH_SDL7L3dIkAIBJqVip9be2bdL4YjoX-aZc-Egchv-7yhOvEKsiULdSpHmMPJvuRHzg1KKeBnyKHIPZkDSx3GMZA6fMip_nUbqVjxNF8_jW4owaNgtDDJmHazhY_r6PMX1-Kx/s1600/Picture+4-20+075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" j8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmO2UbGqMH_SDL7L3dIkAIBJqVip9be2bdL4YjoX-aZc-Egchv-7yhOvEKsiULdSpHmMPJvuRHzg1KKeBnyKHIPZkDSx3GMZA6fMip_nUbqVjxNF8_jW4owaNgtDDJmHazhY_r6PMX1-Kx/s400/Picture+4-20+075.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> </div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRCzKV9CWrHILmHxVIerL1V8HL858QvRFTvVh1DN0PuL57_W16jNNtkmyJYVF3Vx8fuZ8WTsOIwFUQ38aiU-VqzNQg3bE5S1v1_iKgCMJqm1ljEe-fA-CjX3VZdx67yWCnqBEIMiU55dqR/s1600/Picture+4-20+076.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" j8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRCzKV9CWrHILmHxVIerL1V8HL858QvRFTvVh1DN0PuL57_W16jNNtkmyJYVF3Vx8fuZ8WTsOIwFUQ38aiU-VqzNQg3bE5S1v1_iKgCMJqm1ljEe-fA-CjX3VZdx67yWCnqBEIMiU55dqR/s640/Picture+4-20+076.jpg" width="480" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> Because I was working in the shop area when this came in, I had to get my trusty block sander out. Fortunately, the photo-finish on the top was pretty thin and already flaky so it was relatively fast work. Since I have very little experience working with stain on this level, I didn't really know how perfectly sanded it needed to be. I was told that I might have to spend hours getting the top flaw-free, however, I didn't want it perfect or the scuffed paint job I was planning for it would look out of place. So I emailed Marian quick and she said, "I am totally not a perfectionist. It just has to look great, but it doesn’t have to be perfect. The thing with stain is that you have to have all existing varnish and stain removed, or it won’t take evenly and that can look really bad. It’s honestly easier to strip and stain then it is to sand." I didn't have the luxury of using stripper because I didn't want my customers being fumigated, so I applied more muscle. Yes, I generally tend to work harder, not smarter.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I worked through three grades of sand paper and scuffed the sides enough to ready it for paint.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I had found this Icicle Blue paint at a garage sale for 50 cents last year and applied two coats.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> Have you noticed how Marian scuffs her 'worn' pieces from all directions? For some reason this goes against my more anal notions of what's right although I understand the concept that authentically worn pieces aren't going to go with the grain. I had to close my eyes the first few strokes but I got the hang of it quickly.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> I finished the top with a walnut stain and decided to lightly stain the base over the paint as well.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> A piece Miss Mustard Seed would be proud of!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigEFi5nXMXWzVEczCGteW3nidR7txu-xfFqTk7Wlb_JTDBPpa8ubNbZRohgGPDvN9dxONOYByoIPClw1B1qaQdjFyqMXzBLFxHIqAYz0a29K3fcqWK5LAkEP2bAcGw0XEXrcWFAvgFmTsz/s1600/Picture+4-20+074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" j8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigEFi5nXMXWzVEczCGteW3nidR7txu-xfFqTk7Wlb_JTDBPpa8ubNbZRohgGPDvN9dxONOYByoIPClw1B1qaQdjFyqMXzBLFxHIqAYz0a29K3fcqWK5LAkEP2bAcGw0XEXrcWFAvgFmTsz/s400/Picture+4-20+074.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />

Fortunately for us, that meant she was dropping off some of her unused materials, including this pressed cardboard counter top. This stuff is heavy but easy to work with so we were more than happy to add it to the project list.</div> A year later, we finally uncovered it from our in-door junk yard. My partner, the gifted wood worker and creative reclaimer, made this fabulous work space with it. It is pretty enough to use as a kitchen island but also very functional in a work shop. I personally tested the latter. It was the perfect height for me with my sign projects. Usually I'm bent over a makeshift something-or-other that is never even remotely ergonomically correct. So, for a short period of time, I went home with straight back.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Ever since my stop-sign-red dresser paint job, I've been dying to do another 'red' something. The pressed cardboard has a great textural look so a red seemed the perfect compliment.</div> What color would you have chosen?<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> We had this old pew given to us. By the time we got to it, it had been painted and left to the elements for a few years. The color was great but peeling terribly in sheets and the seat was splitting and coming apart from it's sides. We had it for sale 'as is' in the shop for over a year with no bites. After moving it around the shop a few times it got even more precarious so we had put a 'free' sign on it with still no bites. Finally, we moved it to our second shop when we had opened it because there was more room and that is when it gave up the ghost. The poor thing collapsed in our hands.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO34fvaYiPuYQsuIdzorV1n7PRQGSivTHdttNjfdIm4VKZBKxRdGUq8SbIe2vkTLGhZyRaNrKu5zcv9EOHOcVJb_1US9sIzE5gjmLup3T9jBlzCAX_7no1NN3EsM7Mu4o9s7WA7q7Ztrfv/s1600/Picture+014.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO34fvaYiPuYQsuIdzorV1n7PRQGSivTHdttNjfdIm4VKZBKxRdGUq8SbIe2vkTLGhZyRaNrKu5zcv9EOHOcVJb_1US9sIzE5gjmLup3T9jBlzCAX_7no1NN3EsM7Mu4o9s7WA7q7Ztrfv/s400/Picture+014.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Not one to see it as kindling, my partner lovingly stored the parts away for a rainy day. A year later, he has given new life to some of those parts. He used the seat and back piece for the bench and cut a door in half for the sides. The arm rest is made with cherry pieces he found in the basement of our building from another life. He used his nifty pocket hole maker from a garage sale score to give a clean look front and back. We debated greatly as to how to finish it and in the end he polyurethaned just the bench. What an honor to be thought of for such an award! <br />
Now with such an award comes certain responsibilities, some easy and one I find challenging. <br />
1. Thank the person who awarded you (easy)<br />
2. Share 7 things about yourself (somewhat challenging)<br />
3. Award 15 discovered bloggers (urg! only 15?)<br />
<br />
I would like to take a moment and say that if you haven't stopped at Karajeanne's blog <a href="http://www.decor-voyeur.blogspot.com/">Decor Voyeur</a>, you are missing out on a great part of the day. This gal will keep you in stitches with her candidness. She is witty, charming, honest (you gotta see her kitchen to understand the depth of this forthright honesty), bold and without fear. This gal loves you, Karajeanne!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;"> Next step............</div><ol style="text-align: left;"><li><div style="text-align: left;">My favorite lunch is CHEAP. As long as it is under 50 cents, I'll love it. Lately, that would be Raman noodles, a hunk of good cheese and hamburger bun from the local bakery. (You can get a sack of three day old goods for $3! I make a lot of French toast and bread pudding.)</div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">Our house does not look like our shop. Not even close. It does have some vague eclectic touches but everything else, like the furniture, is ordinary. It's hard to keep anything noteworthy knowing we will gut the house if we need inventory.</div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">I love raking! I find it very relaxing.</div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">I believe in fashion over function. I feel a need to wear no less than 3" strappy little numbers no matter what I'm doing.</div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">I prefer hotdogs to hamburgers.</div></li>
<li><div style="text-align: left;">I would rather sand a floor for 9 hours than sit in the shop for 3.</div></li>

I really like the glazed look. I really do. I actually can't wait to try it myself. When I saw this dresser, I didn't like it. I've admired all the projects I've seen on other blogs. Maybe the glaze was too heavy, too much. I thought this dresser looked dirty and I'm sure that was partially true because the glaze was tacky in some spots. Anyway, it had to go. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjZ_hf587KpUSaHE6alChSeg8O2pwlrIiFE4gc5SXo2f3m4ALTAfvkLTvX2UMRTgfkIIhmUAStlmg5xyo7riPJOPx0dzxik3zPIeXOVYuQfkT7Sf-mgCX0WmU7qUGhbPLYYVDXms8VQI9H/s1600/Picture+4-20+033.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjZ_hf587KpUSaHE6alChSeg8O2pwlrIiFE4gc5SXo2f3m4ALTAfvkLTvX2UMRTgfkIIhmUAStlmg5xyo7riPJOPx0dzxik3zPIeXOVYuQfkT7Sf-mgCX0WmU7qUGhbPLYYVDXms8VQI9H/s400/Picture+4-20+033.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I had started sanding a little of the bottom drawer before I<br />
remembered to take pics</td></tr>
</tbody></table> Originally, I thought it had to be this fabulous red I just picked up. It's a bright lipstick red, the kind the pin-ups wore and every gal wishes they could pull off. Somehow, though, it didn't seem right. I kind of liked the idea but I wasn't entirely sold. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Meanwhile, I had been emailing Marian from <a href="http://www.blogtopsites.com/outpost/053467a01c538491e70c3f850e09f0ef">Mustard Seed Interiors</a>. She had transformed this so-so dresser into this eye-catching beauty and I wanted to know exactly how she did it. Fabulous, right?</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK5J5vV5OsE/TamGZYY-s3I/AAAAAAAAH8c/V5jAy4CmQ3g/s1600/009+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RK5J5vV5OsE/TamGZYY-s3I/AAAAAAAAH8c/V5jAy4CmQ3g/s640/009+copy.jpg" width="404" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div> My partner took our dresser out back and did some initial sanding, basically to get it ready to be painted.<br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> It looked so much cleaner but not quite enough. I took some steel wool to the details. A little too much but I loved the look and that is when it hit me. I could get Marian's look from my already painted piece.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: left;"> So, much sanding from my little block sander and a half a bag of steel wool later, I was satisfied with my new look. I loved Marian's natural top look but I decided to leave a scant bit of paint on mine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-1gLFtPR59pyz15CVmK8MUrkx95oRu0pgX748fVTXhC0CMlrLDqgfzfJuypDDUMA5ioBnttkNmpB72-ghIoStChGOCWlAumkRfCwTmxl-DMMnJ4rC6sEOUrpTscRa74TicX1aXQZ-dOvb/s1600/Picture+4-20+048.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-1gLFtPR59pyz15CVmK8MUrkx95oRu0pgX748fVTXhC0CMlrLDqgfzfJuypDDUMA5ioBnttkNmpB72-ghIoStChGOCWlAumkRfCwTmxl-DMMnJ4rC6sEOUrpTscRa74TicX1aXQZ-dOvb/s400/Picture+4-20+048.jpg" width="400" /></a></div> <br />

I am such a sucker for yellow. Our walls above the wainscoting is this same yellow but it doesn't seem as bright as it does on this little counter piece.<br />
We ended up keeping the linoleum top on it because it's hard to argue with the time period thing and also because it was in perfect condition. The metal trim was all intact, so I just buffed it with some steel wool to clean it up.<br />
The inside was lined with contact paper that was half falling off but my trusty heat gun took care of the rest of it.<br />

This is one time I wish I had taken the palm sander to it rather than my usual 'it's good enough' sanding block because the paint did not adhere the greatest. It is good enough but most desks are used roughly and I'm picturing this in a young person's room where hitting it with their toes will add more 'loving' a bit sooner.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs3MsqoUogHwW3NZKIuIvtnAeMXou_qOmgvrRXUaeERQXMo7vaTtCcp2BN8puO8xc6v1DXNMsjPb7IFCSHs5m5CnTehQmi8aH95PT9i4W-MvFg5p52AlyURa0f3qq37JYo2I1XeDW138VD/s1600/Picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs3MsqoUogHwW3NZKIuIvtnAeMXou_qOmgvrRXUaeERQXMo7vaTtCcp2BN8puO8xc6v1DXNMsjPb7IFCSHs5m5CnTehQmi8aH95PT9i4W-MvFg5p52AlyURa0f3qq37JYo2I1XeDW138VD/s320/Picture.jpg" width="240" /></a> I totally lucked out with this paint. I found it at a garage sale for 50 cents. Usually, used paint comes in colors you already have or a color you would never think of using if your life depended on it. I do tend to end up buying it all anyway because sometimes I can mix it to make something I might use. For cheap, it can be a risk worth taking, if only for using it as a possible base coat. I'm too cheap to use 'good' paint for a lousy base coat if I'm putting darker over it like going from raw, natural wood to a red or black.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> So, two coats of this fabulous mint color later, scuff and a paste wax buff finish. I did let the paint cure for a couple days which was excruciatingly long for me. Attention span <em>and</em> patience of a gnat.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

To help alleviate this problem, I found this great idea from The Scrap Shoppe Blog <a href="http://mmscrapshoppe.blogspot.com/2011/03/vinyl-knob-tutorial-3-techniques.html">http://mmscrapshoppe.blogspot.com/2011/03/vinyl-knob-tutorial-3-techniques.html</a> where Michele had used vinyl to decorate the fronts. I'll probably hand paint something but the idea is fabulous!<br />

He sees head boards and foot boards as potential benches but I see signs. He seems to get all the 'good' stuff because he can make more financially with his finished product so I can't argue, but I do come across some cool scraps like these former bed rails. The patina was perfect for something more whimsical. <br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I usually have a list of favorite phrases waiting to be painted onto a sign. So once I have that perfect board, I find the perfect font somewhere on-line. With my trusty quilter's ruler, I draw it out free hand then I hand paint them (no coffee that day!)</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Yes, doing the math, I would be missing a sign. You Decide<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> We were fortunate enough to buy a small estate recently and it couldn't have been better timing. Not so much because the vultures were circling waiting snap it up before us but because we desperately need some bigs in the shop. This dresser turned buffet was one of them. It looks very similar to <a href="http://rusty-bucket.blogspot.com/2010/12/art-deco-in-red.html">the art-deco one I did earlier</a>, but this one is smaller. <br />
<div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsqHXUozV7l1bg7q7zODEobmeWI9sy6cROAXzTLRydlQgpZhie4iETCJzJgw0xRZGf9v2rbmJXAq4au2rDMyI50WhN-lxKsc3FoehGfmHdVCRA6W7rdj04SgJ1J1qv4KUir9IuxcgS88fR/s1600/Picture+006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsqHXUozV7l1bg7q7zODEobmeWI9sy6cROAXzTLRydlQgpZhie4iETCJzJgw0xRZGf9v2rbmJXAq4au2rDMyI50WhN-lxKsc3FoehGfmHdVCRA6W7rdj04SgJ1J1qv4KUir9IuxcgS88fR/s320/Picture+006.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> The structure was solid and had no veneer issues. (Yeah!) I filled in the lines on the drawers and the holes from the handles. I learned this great trick where you fill the hole with golf pegs, cut off the parts that are sticking out, sand and putty. So simple! These holes were actually too big for golf pegs (I didn't have any, anyway) and too small for the wooden pegs so I had to drill the hole a bit bigger to hammer the pegs in. I had exactly ten floral-design pulls left from Lord-knows-where. I thought with the color it was fitting.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Since we had sold the last red buffet, I didn't hesitate to do another. It started out not so hot but it only takes a few simple changes to make furniture lovable again.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUW2X-JSW-7l0Zq3rO52Jn4mJXsVSk7CXnHmW1iSjPDohqb1BHK43IBEl-suJsI8y-D9LWMhpE4LnwG4vKOqgObFCK9A_Wt9pWtm8703OGzggzSo_SKqYsvO0r6IREAK0M8Yvm6Kczj6qK/s1600/Picture+004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUW2X-JSW-7l0Zq3rO52Jn4mJXsVSk7CXnHmW1iSjPDohqb1BHK43IBEl-suJsI8y-D9LWMhpE4LnwG4vKOqgObFCK9A_Wt9pWtm8703OGzggzSo_SKqYsvO0r6IREAK0M8Yvm6Kczj6qK/s320/Picture+004.jpg" width="320" /></a> I had to fix a broken drawer front (easy) first. Then, I got a little crazy with my sanding block. I've been blessed with a little space of my own toward the rear of the shop. Customers can usually find me painting or decorating birdhouses here. It is not a space to strip furniture or plug in an actual sander so I have do things the hard way sometimes or I don't find time to do it.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> After sanding, I had to go through my pile of mushroom knobs, but wouldn't you know, I have two ice cream buckets full of these wooden knobs, and , of course, none of them worked. To be fair, most are in various colors and only a few are unpainted. I had pictured pecan stained knobs to compliment the green color but I had to move on. I've been hording these crystal knobs for some unseen future project but I am coming to the realization that I have to start living in the now. There are always going to be projects and I can't be saving something for a what-if? situation that could happen six months from now, or not at all. So I picked out the crappiest, not because I had parting issues but because I thought the paint spattered ones and the ones with chips would be a more perfect fit. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAcjaW7p7uBUqtz5eZrwmDCX4FknbDmNL2C5lZgC_sfM3cpblnM0rdInwGPO2oPG_pRtAUL-cx4CqB0pNf55zRTUyaynKrd0oJCG41AcNoxlxPM2z-I0xVwdYx_zB1fdcfjSgLnefcDy3S/s1600/Picture+003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAcjaW7p7uBUqtz5eZrwmDCX4FknbDmNL2C5lZgC_sfM3cpblnM0rdInwGPO2oPG_pRtAUL-cx4CqB0pNf55zRTUyaynKrd0oJCG41AcNoxlxPM2z-I0xVwdYx_zB1fdcfjSgLnefcDy3S/s320/Picture+003.jpg" width="240" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8oEDXYa5FRnfOF4AwNTWQ_mh1u0iStXFZ6sgKq5fUMJAfLxuzUnL3uWhc7O0KEPPUeL8ZFqEc3C5nC6pmf3MmzNr6-5dUal77PUGtBOpTzBiOJce92Pbni1WccAetiJR7AAj0XYaQ5B2m/s1600/Picture+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi8oEDXYa5FRnfOF4AwNTWQ_mh1u0iStXFZ6sgKq5fUMJAfLxuzUnL3uWhc7O0KEPPUeL8ZFqEc3C5nC6pmf3MmzNr6-5dUal77PUGtBOpTzBiOJce92Pbni1WccAetiJR7AAj0XYaQ5B2m/s320/Picture+001.jpg" width="240" /></a> Out on the floor yesterday, sold today. As I am writing this blog (I haven't even added the pictures yet) I knew it wouldn't last long. It was the first thing people went to as they came in the door. Finally, I had the cutest young couple come up all excited saying they had to have it. This was one of those projects that had me cringing the first time I saw it and worried through the whole process that it would turn out. Now that I've done a few, my anxieties seem to be lessening so someday all this will seem like second nature.<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> It had the usual veneer issues. The drawers weren't too bad and the small pieces along the bottoms easily came off whole. The top, however, was the typical nightmare! <div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I've learned to get crazy on the peeling veneer right away - just doing it without thinking about it. I have stripped many pieces but we soon realized it wasn't very cost effective for us. Also, it never failed that I would spend two days stripping when the customer couldn't wait to get it home and paint it. I had to see for myself with this very talented vendor we had. Terry would buy our cast-offs and bring in the next day a truly unrecognisable beauty. Of course, he'd then sell it in three days to triple his money. Couldn't argue with that! I think most people paint the outside of furniture without a thought to the insides. I am one of these people. I would never think of painting the drawers and usually give only a vague thought to possibly covering any stains or 'uglies' at the bottoms. It's not so much laziness but more of an idea that I don't think people care.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsMsoHo7UNoNpSjwUypCppsUUnuK679n-AiP0RiCp80HHxTSsyNc4lBGNpKSBeD3JbXB6x8c-0niyxZgaPstklkkSZKo463pJ9Gr45khiJzV9NU4XvciXIda4UxIlQG4ToY_87pR1ucLai/s1600/Picture+054.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsMsoHo7UNoNpSjwUypCppsUUnuK679n-AiP0RiCp80HHxTSsyNc4lBGNpKSBeD3JbXB6x8c-0niyxZgaPstklkkSZKo463pJ9Gr45khiJzV9NU4XvciXIda4UxIlQG4ToY_87pR1ucLai/s320/Picture+054.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> So, I had to say that I took a step back when I saw what <a href="http://chrissiescollections.blogspot.com/2011/03/creamy-distressed-finish-vanity-chair.html">Chrissie</a> was doing. She really had thought about all the details. All her drawers are painted and sometimes even lined. Very impressive! </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> When this simple plywood box came my way, I knew this was a good project to start with. To paint the outside seemed obvious, but with the inside painted, it gave it less of a discarded look and definitely more if a finished look. I did add hardware with more pizazz and had to switch out the hinges for something that matched better.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I really thought I would be cursing Chrissie halfway through it wishing I had never started but it went so fast, even for a small project. Thanks for the inspiration, Chrissie!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I'll probably still leave whole drawers alone but now I will be thinking about the stains that I could be painting over. I think a liner experimentation will be in my future!<br />

Originally, it had mirrors on the panels when they brought it in, but, in the move, one of them had broke in the handling. So, when we picked it up, it had the one left. This is probably one of those fortunate events, because I would have left the mirrors on most likely. It would have been very functional, but I don't think I would have been as happy with the end result.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> In the planning stages, I originally had my heart set on painting it white and finding some beautiful green glass knobs (which I didn't have). We do have some neighbors that refinish some absolutely gorgeous pieces and I thought maybe I could barter for some. I had just finished painting their 'OPEN' sign and ended up trading it for a pair of big antiques knobs in my desired color. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo85NS0vy6udFFWphappC34qwkU5cKLuHYjYyd9cUEvdZNZnqlqE1y0gLSunELvjEgNELWtvGXEURNAXlKjd2z2leaOVVgwS10_x-lTt1bslqc8WsiQsosAn07U63E5JOsw49zQuhose6/s1600/Picture+046.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJo85NS0vy6udFFWphappC34qwkU5cKLuHYjYyd9cUEvdZNZnqlqE1y0gLSunELvjEgNELWtvGXEURNAXlKjd2z2leaOVVgwS10_x-lTt1bslqc8WsiQsosAn07U63E5JOsw49zQuhose6/s200/Picture+046.jpg" width="200" /></a> Now, if you notice the after shot, it is not white. Somewhere in between the planning and the painting, I changed my mind. I couldn't really decide what I wanted to do with the panels. We had bought a birch covered trunk full of material from the same auction, so when I saw the white linen, I knew that that would be perfect. Having two whites together, however, always leaves one ending up looking dirty. I sided with the linen and found this beautiful green paint in my stash. The new color, however, wasn't really compatable with the color of the knobs. So, now I have a pair of glass knobs for some other project, but I'll most likely horde them for a few years.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxcEhrzHKl2U0ZEng5FBYds8hIBJWrzdhMT1dO6Y4HLboRNsIgvOnycHLaM0yYk2VkXl0hbPLDgK-0DZfWz3ySJbSsNcbWeX746wU41-LDRNmn1xc4DQi22fcv3x_co5ZpUYcowcnkogUi/s1600/Picture+037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxcEhrzHKl2U0ZEng5FBYds8hIBJWrzdhMT1dO6Y4HLboRNsIgvOnycHLaM0yYk2VkXl0hbPLDgK-0DZfWz3ySJbSsNcbWeX746wU41-LDRNmn1xc4DQi22fcv3x_co5ZpUYcowcnkogUi/s320/Picture+037.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtCiwFrfPPtB6cRX2HGRWpGrcWPFUdG84l4SwAVOhgfaxzRpDyxBRC_ZBthQu4mJDSt1L15q3T1Zx4AyZmUgzQLazhFRH-83JcvWiAyN5S7-Oi4COxVB_3g-ykXPSMlFG-wNJQpIx4c7EQ/s1600/Picture+038.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtCiwFrfPPtB6cRX2HGRWpGrcWPFUdG84l4SwAVOhgfaxzRpDyxBRC_ZBthQu4mJDSt1L15q3T1Zx4AyZmUgzQLazhFRH-83JcvWiAyN5S7-Oi4COxVB_3g-ykXPSMlFG-wNJQpIx4c7EQ/s320/Picture+038.jpg" width="240" /></a> </div><br />

We don't use anything for its original intention so it never saw any fish during its stay under our roof. Instead, I used it to stack short planks on its end so they wouldn't get buried in the pile. I have been getting down on boards for my signs so it wasn't being used to its full potential. Anything is fair game in our indoor junk yard. The rule is that the other doesn't have a claim on anything, especially if it has been sitting around for almost two years. But, I was using that!!! You snooze, you lose.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgedhKLGzT66KY_tZ3-PPXXyI0vPrCcaNWpfF0o9F3lWNAy8yN81sNz_dRgq8ksYrIkejfwNowXvtqMTzSOBBJg7vRoT-Nqsvt16r-ZascVRIpogXPmsS0CIerc073vJbnn3k5IXDwyvggA/s1600/Picture+011.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" r6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgedhKLGzT66KY_tZ3-PPXXyI0vPrCcaNWpfF0o9F3lWNAy8yN81sNz_dRgq8ksYrIkejfwNowXvtqMTzSOBBJg7vRoT-Nqsvt16r-ZascVRIpogXPmsS0CIerc073vJbnn3k5IXDwyvggA/s400/Picture+011.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> When I saw the end result, I had to nod with humble approval. He'd done it again. My partner had taken this cast-off and poly-ed the steel base, showing all it's glorious wear and tear. He glued some 1 x 6's together and made a beautiful top and a shelf below. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Now my storage unit is a spectacular side board! </div><br />

The wings are very versatile when you need extra seating for the kids table or buffet style dining, however, we find that most people like the look but these tables usually end up being used primarily as an end table. 'Just in case' is always nice because you do never know. This handy end table is especially unique in that there are drawers on both sides! </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> My partner had to replace one of the gates and used his new pocket hole maker we picked up at a garage sale last year. Score! The surface was good but felt it needed a paint job. I had picked up this great copper color (do I dare say it?) at a garage sale last summer. It's a great earthy tone that sold well last year, so I'm hoping... The color in itself was too much and I was really stumped as what to do about it. I had thought originally a two-tone job but I, honestly, wasn't comfortable with my options. What about a maizy yellow and scuff job? Cool, but I didn't have a maize color and, if you haven't noticed by now, I probably won't buy it unless it comes at a severe discount.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Then I remembered something I've been dying to do since I saw it. <a href="http://thelovelyresidence.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-two-one-two-three-four.html">http://thelovelyresidence.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-two-one-two-three-four.html</a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I've always wanted to do a numbered stencil job but nothing seemed right until this project. It has six drawers, what better way to point it out? Perfect!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> Beth can now be found at <a href="http://www.thestoriesofa2z.com/">http://www.thestoriesofa2z.com/</a> where she has pictured a mason jar chandelier and a sweet little stool both with numbered stencil jobs. Sky's the limit!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I do everything by hand so I drew it out and painted them in black. (Tip to self: Don't drink a lot of coffee before painting). I did the usual scuffing and a paste wax finish. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I may add more black but haven't decided where. Maybe the table's edging or the underside of its leaves.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I did do all six numbers. I have them arranged to show an odd and even side in one picture and a more typical arrangement in the other. This is the first one that came with casters, not that they worked but it was different. I really love adding the old casters to these chunks to make them a little more versatile but I am running out of matching sizes. I must have twenty that are off by just a smidgen. Oh well, great birdhouse material! <div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> This one was an easy transformation. That is so nice every once in awhile, I get thrown a bone! My latest little buffet had very few issues. The veneer was intact although very scratched and the top coat was flaking terribly. There was some fillets missing on the front of one of the doors so I easily popped those off for another project. Otherwise , I just needed to find some fitting knobs for the doors from my vast collection and we were good to go.</div> Sanding took care of the flaking bits which was a necessary step anyway. Four coats later from my favorite Rust-Oleum paint, Heirloom White, covered most of it while some spots needed a little more encouragement from a fifth coat. Lightly sanding a few edges and finishing those raw edges with a paste wax completed the new look for this buffet. <a href="http://www.rustybucketantiques.com/">www.rustybucketantiques.com</a><br />

Like all new-comers to auctions, I didn't have a clue as to what to expect. I thought there were two kinds of auctions - high-end like Sothebys and the rest. Both, I thought, would prove equally challenging and aggressive. Little did I know.</div></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I really thought I would have to fight for literally every scrap. I figured the business was all trash-to-treasure seekers and all dealers had a creative vein and a dedication to spending time on each piece. Truth is, most dealers buy ready to put on the sales floor with little to no handling so they tend towards the 'creme'. Only very few buy the truly crappy primitive pieces with the intent on putting any work into them.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> So, there I was, at the end of one of my first auctions, coveting what lay before me on the ground. I was salivating. It was an entire row of hardware from this farmer's workshop. I know your picturing crystal handles, ornate face plates, marble finials, brass pulls, porcelain casters, elaborate wood fillets, boxes of hinges and door knobs but it was better that! OK, there was some of that scattered underneath it all but what I saw was infinite possibilities. I had before me washers, nuts, bolts and screws of every variety, nails of all sorts, drill bits, piles of sandpaper, corner braces, upholstery tacks, various hooks and catches and all I could think was that I couldn't wait to get all 243 pounds back to my indoor junk yard and start sorting (I exaggerate the weight only slightly).</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> When the auctioneer finally ambled over to my line I had to remind myself to breath and keep it together. Don't jump at the first number.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> At first he started with choice. The bid was high. $10. Too rich for my blood. I couldn't fathome giving up one box but there must have been 20. Maybe I could pick up the leftovers for cheap. Slowly, the numbers dropped. Finally, $1. No one was bidding. Was there something wrong with everyone? Were they hearing this and if so, what was the catch? Was I in a time warp and the auctioneer was only talking to me?</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> "OK, all together one money."</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I couldn't believe my luck! Or did that mean someone else was holding out like me and wanted the whole lot, too? Looking around, I couldn't tell which of those duffers was playing coy. There were at least a dozen I had to assess without giving up my position.</div> The auctioneer started at $10 again. It was excruciating. It was all I could do to keep from dancing a jig. It was still anyone's game, though.<br />
Finally, $1. My hand shot up so fast my shoulder separated a little. OK, this is where the opposition would show him or herself. My eyes were defiantly screaming, "Bring it!"<br />
"Going once."<br />
This was the moment of truth.<br />
"Going twice."<br />
Which one of you was going to crush my dreams?<br />
"Sold."<br />
I was the proud owner of my very own hardware store.<br />
I realized later no one was interested. In fact, there was snickering from the peanut gallery as I was loading it all up - one box at a time. Something about 'new' and 'hardware store down the road.'<br />
So, I say bring your thick skin and let them laugh. The last laugh will be yours! They will never see the cool second life this neglected pile of junk received. <a href="http://www.rustybucketantiques.com/">http://www.rustybucketantiques.com/</a><br />

Farm auctions are the best places to find junque!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> I don't mean the type where there's a lot of cattle and farm equipment on the bill. I'm talking when it's a household sale where, for whatever the reason, everything has to get sold. You have to be able to read between the lines at what they aren't selling. It's the crap they find unworthy of a mention that's the ticket.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"> The trick after that is patience. It's usually long hours of standing around (average 6) before they actually get to the good stuff. But, this leaves you plenty of time to scour the area because you are going to go into the depths of the basement, if it is permitted, walk through tall grass for anything good thrown out to the elements, find the burn pile for any good patina and the rafter-high pile behind the barn. This last one is a closely guarded secret!</div> Going in with eyes wide open and a trash-to-treasure attitude allows you the edge to see the possibilities that are so easily overlooked.<br />
Also, remember that with patience, creativity, a tetanus shot, long jeans and work boots, you must bring your thick skin. Yes, your thick skin. Be prepared to be laughed at.<br />
I've had farmers rolling in the grass because of my eagerness to actually spend money on stuff that had been sitting outside for over three decades. They aren't too eager to help, either, but they will sit back and supervise your efforts because they can't believe that rusted racks, jars of screws, bicycle parts, tomato cages, scrap wood, and buckets with holes are actually worth something to someone. What they aren't seeing is that those jars are Ball jars dating 1905, the multicolored metal camp chairs, primitive benches, wrought iron scrap fencing, chicken feeders, birdhouses, the pile of bow back chairs , a vintage cigarette sign, and the iron sewing machine stand you bought virtually free. Score!<br />
Now, who has the last laugh?<br />

I was going to put it back and do some shabby drapery on the side panels but the piece wasn't screaming shabby chic - those angles again. Once I took the mirror off, I realized why she had mounted it there. There was a nice long chunk of wood an eighth of an inch deep and almost as big as the mirror missing. I was thinking covering it but I was stumped with what. I had a great suggestion to use a pair of shutters we had out on the sales floor (thanks, Terry!), but they were a stitch too big. I didn't want to putty that much besides you could see that it wasn't going to solve anything - the whole band-aid-on-a-broken-arm thing. Maybe it's that time of year when we start to look for the spring colors or maybe the color isn't so intimidating to me anymore, but I love white! The shop is going through a sort of springtime lightening lately with all of my new projects. These are a few of my recent transformations with my new favorite go-to color.<br />
This sweet little side table had some flaking going on. Typically, I would have done the black on it but it wasn't speaking to me this time. Since I just finished the buffet, I felt inspired so white it was. $42 <strong><span style="color: red;">SOLD</span></strong><br />
